How to customize amigurumi eyes to give character to your creations!!!

There are many ways to give expression to our amigurumi, but one thing is certain: the eyes do most of the work!

Among the many little amigurumi characters I’ve created over the years, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different techniques, both for my own creative satisfaction and to match the personality of the character I was asked to make.

Most of the time—almost always, actually—the easiest solution is to attach two safety eyes and call it done.

It’s definitely the fastest and most practical option, requiring less time and effort.

But if you’d like to get creative and give your amigurumi even more personality, I’d love to share some of my experiments and ideas for making custom amigurumi eyes.

How to Paint Safety Eyes for Amigurumi

One of my latest experiments involved painting safety eyes using both acrylic paints and nail gel.

The result surprised me in a positive way, and I think it’s a great technique for anyone who enjoys customizing every detail of their handmade creations.

To create these eyes, I followed these steps:

  1. I painted the eye green, starting from the outer edges and leaving the center pupil black.
  2. I blended the color using a darker shade of green.
  3. I added some lights with white acrylic paint.
  4. I placed the eyes under a nail lamp to help the paint dry.
  5. I covered everything with a clear gel top coat.
  6. I put them again under the lamp.

For this second experiment, these were the steps:

  1. I painted the edges of the eye using blue nail gel.
  2. I put the gel under the lamp.
  3. I added some lights with white acrylic paint (I didn’t have white gel available).
  4. I allowed everything to dry again.
  5. I applied a clear gel top coat to seal the design.
  6. I completed the curing process under the lamp.

The Final Result

I have to say that the final result was very satisfying, even if it wasn’t perfect.

After all, when experimenting with a new technique, a few imperfections are simply part of the learning process.

What I love most is the possibility of creating custom colors, gradients, and lights that make every amigurumi unique and recognizable.

Personally, I think working with nail gel is slightly easier, especially because of the glossy finish it provides.

However, with a little patience and attention to detail, acrylic paints can also produce beautiful results.

A Little Extra Tip

I think it would be interesting to try using UNIPOSCAR paint markers instead of acrylic paint applied with a brush, as I did.

The application would probably be faster, drying time shorter, and the color more even and consistent.

Give More Personality to Your Amigurumi

Experimenting with eyes is one of the most enjoyable ways to completely transform an amigurumi’s expression.

Sometimes all it takes is a different color, an extra light, or a subtle gradient to bring an entirely new character to life.
